The Penn District of NYC is the most connected transportation hub in the United States. The District includes connections with 15 subway lines and 5 commuter rail systems. This diagram was displayed in Penn 2, which is being renovated and enhanced by Vornado, the real estate company which owns many of buildings in and around Penn Station and is a major player in the redevelopment of the area.
My son Kevin works for Vornado at Penn 2 and gave me a tour before a Knicks – Wizards basketball game at the connected Madison Square Garden. The building will be a show place when completed (see picture on display at the right and views from the roof below). Vornado is also the private partner in the P3 that redeveloped the Moynihan Train Hall, a project Kevin had worked on previously. Additional new redevelopment adjacent to the District includes residential at Hudson Yards and Manhattan West.
The Penn District is in the process of becoming a model for revitalizing urban mixed use (residential, retail, offices, sports & entertainment, restaurants) and transit oriented development. The District will be ready and waiting for the completion of the Gateway Hudson Tunnel Project, which will add the much needed RELIABLE commuter and intercity rail capacity to the 100 year old existing tunnels.
